ABOUT

Joost Bob fell in love with his guitar at the age of 8 years young, as his piano-playing grandmother introduced him to playing music. His love for jazz, funk, and blues however was instilled in him much earlier. Oscar Peterson, Shirley Horn, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tony Joe White, and many more of the greats sounded through the speakers of his childhood home.

Playing with many inspiring musicians live on stage throughout his teenage years made him decide to dedicate his life to music. After finishing his Jazz studies in The Netherlands, he moved to London for new musical adventures.

After 6 years of living in London, playing gigs, and running a guitar shop in the West End, Joost Bob launched his very first record named Times, in 2019.

Now he’s back in The Netherlands, Amsterdam. Where he recently released his 2nd record named Bygones, in 2024.

The story behind Bygones

Back in 2019 I released my very first EP whilst living in London. Life was good. When I moved back to my home country, a lot changed. After a 10-year relationship, we broke up.

Not too long after this event, I lost my job. So I decided to move to a little town named Gorinchem. I managed to find a small place to rent with a round table, a view on a river and a bridge. I Needed to sit and think for a bit. This setting was quite perfect to do so, and to write new songs.

One of the greatest gifts in life is the fact we can grab a pen and paper, and start finding the right words to alter the tough times into stories. In my case, into songs. And so it began.

My uncle Hein played a big role in shaping my love for music. He lives in a beautiful place in a forest. Here he has a recording studio, so we started recording my new tunes late 2021. After a 3 year process, the next process started.

My brother Simon and dear friend Remy helped me brainstorming on the title for this new EP. As I am in a way better place then when I started writing this record, we came up with Bygones. Leaving memories where they are made. Or in my case, into 5 new songs.

The story behind Times

Ever since my ears switched from standby to “on” I’ve loved music. I think music is the same as love, sometimes we think that we don’t need it but we always do. It is the most beautiful thing in the world. I wrote this piece to give a backstory on how Times originated.

In April of 2019 I went to a magical place, The Isle of Skye, Scotland. One day we went for a hike around a Loch and after a couple of hours, we sat down on a beautiful piece of the world, a place where nature is still in charge. Here, we started writing. I was using my grandmother Mieke’s fountain pen but when we came back late at night I realized, I lost this very special pen.

I felt really bad because Mieke wrote us amazing letters with this pen until she passed away in November 2018. She used to put me behind her piano when I was a young child and she showed me her love for the instrument and for music. She made me aware what an amazing friendship you can have with your instrument. A friendship that will always be there for you, even when there’s nobody around or no one who understands you when you need it so bad.

And so, the next morning before sunrise I walked all the way back through the mountains to the loch as quick as I could. This morning changed everything. The sun was slowly rising over the mountaintop. And along the way it felt like Mieke was trying to have a chat with me. She was reminding me of what she told me when I was a young kid. She was telling me that music is the most amazing thing in the world and that I should pursue my dream by translating my relationship with music into recording my own songs.

Maybe things don’t happen for a reason, but I believe that in our response to things that happen, they can be as fruitful as we want them to be.
